Pinery Provincial Park
Located on the shores of Lake Huron, Highway 21 (the Bluewater Highway) just South of Grand Bend
Activities and Attractions
The largest attration to the Pinery is the sand beach. The delicate ecosystems also draw naturalists. Sand dunes and Oak Savanas are prominent features.
The beautiful sand beaches are perfect for a beach day, or for boating, though only experienced boaters are encouraged to paddle the lake. Within the aprk there are several rivers which are recommended for novice boaters. The waves in the lake can reach ocean-like sizes and the currents are very strong. Boat tours can also be booked in the nearby towns.
A more urban park, it is well suited to group camping. Located about 5 KM from the town of Grand Bend, this is an ideal location to watch the races at the Grand Bend Speedway, as well as to explore picturesque villages along the coast including Bayfield.
Within the park, birding is especially good. The location of the park is within migration routes for geese, ducks and many other bird species. The dunes provide an excellent habitat for other, more rare bird species.
The trails in the Pinery are designed to educate. There are several nature trails with signage to teach walkers about the delicate oak savana, wetlands and the sand dunes. Many of the trails are handicap accessible.
Fishing in the waters of the river and Lake Huron is very good. Salmon is easily caught several miles off the coast.

Hazards
Raccoons in the park are not bad, but occasional nighttime visitors will make you want to keep your food packed safely out of reach.
Mosquitoes are active a month after the snow melts, especially in May/early June. Mosquitoes can carry diseases, but the actual risk of infection is very low in most parts of the world. Mosquitoes are known to carry the West Nile Virus and
Malaria organisms (primarily only in south America and Africa). West Nile Virus only poses a danger to the very young, elderly, and those with weakened immune systems. Those with the Sickle Cell trait are not affected as much by Malaria.
